He regretted Lauren finding out what she must do as suddenly as she had, and he understood why she’d taken off so quickly afterward. Kaos had hung around for a little while then gone downstairs as well. That’d left Dagger a lot of time to reconsider his actions and ask himself if he could have done anything different. Strictly speaking, you can always do different. But that didn’t mean the results would have been any better.

It was a horrible thing to tell a young girl, to say her life was so pivotal to someone else’s and something only she was capable of was their saving grace. That was the major reason why he’d held off from introducing himself. Speaking personally, he would love to be a father, but only when God’s timing was right. His illness rushed things. Plus, he wasn’t the only person involved. He had no idea how Lauren felt about it and, until he was recovered, couldn’t even consider it.

Ideally, they would fall in love. That’d worked out for his brothers, and yes, he and Lauren had an attraction to each other, but it was a long way from there to making a lifelong commitment, including having the devotion to become a parent. Children were, as the Bible said, a reward for lives lived in love and grace ... and he saw his in a more selfish light now.

Had he really held off from talking to Lauren to spare her feelings or his own? The thought of sharing himself so intimately with a woman frightened him, but in giving into his fear, he’d risked the happiness of his family, including his mother, who despite her flaws, and she had many, did love him. And he’d risked all the lives his existence as a superhuman was supposed to save.

She’d said he was foolish, and she was right.

A knock came on the doorframe, and Dagger stared into Delilah’s troubled gaze. He recognized in it the source of her sorrow, something his brother, Kaos, had indicated was bothering him as well, and for once, sought to move past his own problems. Though the ache of speaking somehow amplified his other pains.

“Come in,” he said, his voice gravelly.

She crept across the room, perching in a chair beside the bed.

“You must be patient,” he said. “The child will come at the right time.”

Her lips trembled, and she bowed her head beside his hand. He shifted his fingers overtop and muttered a quiet prayer.

“I feel like a failure,” she said. “The surgery was supposed to work.”

“What does the doctor say?”

She sniffled. “He has me on infertility drugs, says it shouldn’t be a problem. But if so, then why is it?”

He considered his answer and could only, once more, think of himself. “Sometimes our biggest obstacles are ones we’ve created. Look at me, for example.”

Her head lifted.

“Mom was right. I delayed, fearing Lauren’s feelings, but I also feared my own. I have loved others. I love you and Kaos and Crowne, all the members of my family.
